Installing Software With a Linux Package Manager

On this page

Linux distributions install and update software through a package manager, rather than downloading installers manually.

On Ubuntu or Debian (apt)

Update the package list

sudo apt update

Install a package

sudo apt install package-name

Remove a package

sudo apt remove package-name

On AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux or CentOS (dnf/yum)

Install a package

sudo dnf install package-name (or yum install package-name on older systems)

Remove a package

sudo dnf remove package-name

Keeping your system updated

Run sudo apt upgrade (Ubuntu/Debian) or sudo dnf upgrade (AlmaLinux/Rocky) periodically to keep installed software up to date with the latest security patches.
