Using File Manager: Upload, Edit and Manage Files
On this page
File Manager is cPanel's built-in tool for working with your website's files directly in your browser, without needing a separate FTP program.
Opening File Manager
Log into cPanel from your client area, then open File Manager under the Files section. Your website's files live in the public_html folder.
Uploading files
Step 1: Navigate to the right folder
Open public_html, or the specific subfolder you want to upload into.
Step 2: Click Upload
Click the Upload button in the toolbar, then drag your files in or select them from your computer. Larger files may take a few moments.
Editing a file
Right-click any text-based file (such as .html, .php or .css) and choose Edit to open it in the built-in code editor. Save your changes when you're done.
Changing file permissions
Right-click a file or folder and choose Permissions to control who can read, write or execute it. Most files should stay at 644 and most folders at 755 unless an application specifically asks for something different.
Compressing and extracting files
Select one or more files, then use Compress in the toolbar to create a .zip. To extract an uploaded .zip, right-click it and choose Extract.
